Goosebump Olympic Moment

Nadia Comaneci (Montreal 1976): Not many athletes get to force changes in their sport through the sheer weight of their individual brilliance, but that is what Comaneci achieved. In a sport reliant on the often questionable subjective views of judges, Comaneci achieved on the uneven bars what no one believed was possible - perfection. In fact, so unlikely was the prospect of a perfect 10, that the scoreboard was not able to cope with it, leaving Comaneci staring disbelieving at a score of 1.0, until the realisation crept in that she had forever changed her sport. She did it a further six times during the course of the Games.

City of 2016

The Chicago bid for the 2016 Summer Olympics is the attempt by the city of Chicago and the United States If Chicago is chosen, the games would be held from July 22 to August 7, with the Paralympics held between August 12 and August 28.

I have been Chicago and I know the position of the city. Whenever I think about the 2016 games I always question myself "from where all this money will come from to the city, what will the authorities will do to promote this life time event? I will answer myself yeah they will impose more taxes on the citizen of the city to make more revenue. Probably it may be case for the all the cities, who are running for this bid. But anyhow one of them have to host this event. so lets look at some more details about these cities comparing each one of them. Chicago has space to build new places but no money.
The Tokyo 2016 Olympic Bid is the attempt by Tokyo, the capital of Japan. The city previously held the 1964 Summer Olympics. If Tokyo wins the bid, the games will be held July 29 to August 14, and the Paralympics will be held August 31 to September 11.

Tokyo could suffer from the fact that Beijing hosted the Games in 2008, although it would by no means be the first time the Olympics have been staged on the same continent within eight years.

The Madrid 2016 Olympic bid is an attempt by Madrid, the capital city of Spain, to host the Olympic Games in 2016. . If Madrid is chosen, the Games will be held between August 5 and August 21, with the Paralympics being held between September 9 and September 20.
Madrid hope to build on their 2012 bid which, though ultimately unsuccessful, prompted a good reaction from the IOC - it was overall second in technical evaluation, while the city was ranked top in seven categories; "Government support, legal issues and public opinion", "General infrastructure", "Environment", "Sports venues", "Olympic Village", "Transport concept" and "Overall project and legacy".
The greatest downfall of Madrid's bid, though, could be that the 2012 summer Games is scheduled in London and the 2014 winter Games due to take place in Sochi, Russia. Staging three consecutive Olympic Games in Europe would, on the face of it, appear unlikely. The city's successful staging of the 2002 Football World Cup, 1964 Summer Olympics and 1972 and 1998 Winter Olympics mark it out as arguably the most experienced player in the last four, while it will also boast excellent public transportation, including three ring roads which are currently being built around the city to help reduce congestion problems, and ample accommodation for visitors.

The Rio de Janeiro bid for the 2016 Summer Olympics and Paralympics was recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on September 14, 2007. This is the first time that the city has proceeded to the Candidature phase after four failed attempts in 1936, 1940, 2004 and 2012. The proposed dates range from August 5 to 21 for the Olympic Games, and September 7 (Independence Day of Brazil) to 18 for the Summer Paralympics.
This city has got the highest ratings for the government support, legal issues and public opinion government has alloted $240 billion of funds to the event. as this city is hosting the 2014 world cup football event, they dont have to work too hard to improve there infrastructure.

The race is on...which city will host the 2016 Olympic Games?

I love the competition between the four cities and how each of them tries to reveal the best things they have and can offer to all the tourists they will have to accommodate if they are going to win the bid. But, of course, they all have their PROS and CONS.

First of all, TOKYO previousely held the 1964 Summer Olympics, which is a plus for the city, because it's already "been there and done that." One of the advantages that Tokyo has regarding its chances to win the bid is the fact that it is one of the world's leading cities as far as culture, commerce and resources, and beside the excellent public transportation, three rings are being built around the city to reduce congestion problems. Another strenght of Tokyo's bid is its ample accommodation, with over 124.000 hotel rooms nearby. Tokyo also has several facilities that would host the events at the 2016 Olympics, and also an Olympic Village will be built and other venues. Anyway, despite Tokyo's outstandind strenghts related to the 2016's bid, in my opinion it won't win because of the Beijing Games that have been held in the region eight years ago and also because of Tokyo's own previous hosting in 1964.

Secondly, MADRID bid before in 1972 and for 2012 Olympic Games. The city's strong bid ultimately lost in 2012 to London. Madrid has a strong sports culture hosting three football teams and two basketball teams, so it kind of has the good attitude and sports spirit related to the Olympics. The competition venues in Madrid would be in two main clusters, the Eastern zone and the River zone. Madrid also enjoys a high level of support from its citizens and politicians. Although Madrid's bid is a very strong one, I consider that its chances decrease because of the fact that is the consecutive bid after 2012 Summer Olympics in London and the 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia. This would stage three Olympic Games in Europe in a row, an uncommon occurrence.

Further on, RIO DE JANEIRO was chosen by the Brazilian Olympic Committee as the national postulant city for the hosting of 2016 Summer Olympics. If elected the city would become the first in South America to host the Summer Olympics. The competition venues will be located in four Olympic zones and divided in seven Olympic clusters. Rio's competition venues meet the International Federation's technical requirements and IOC's standards. Also the weather in Rio is one of the city's strengths, with warm days, cool nights and the absence of heavy rainfall. Although Rio has many chances to win the bid, I believe that it won't happen because they are already hosting the World Cup in 2014.

Last but not least, I consider that CHICAGO has the biggest chances to win the bid because of a great number of factors throughout the main one is the huge diversity existing in the city. That's a plus because we can all unite and give a warm welcome to all the tourists that woukld come to attend the Olympic Games :) Rather than talking about Chicago's strenghts, I would like to post Obama's message to the IOC: "Chicago is a city where the world's races and religions and nationalities all live and work and play and reach for the American Dream that brought them here;where our civic parades wave the colors of every culture;where our classrooms are filled with the sounds of the world's languages;and where jazz and rancheras and bhangra can be heard down the street from one another."

All in all, regardless of who's going to host the 2016 Olympic Games I would like to wish them all Good Luck.
幸運を祈る東京!
Buena Suerte Madrid!
Boa Sorte Rio!
Good Luck Chicago!

City Hosting 2016 Olympic Games

Hosting olympic is always a dream for the city, but hosting it may be a nightmare for the authorities. As we know it will be the home for the millions of people in those game days. For them city not only need to provide the fun and adventure but also food, accomodation and tranportation.

As we all know that Chicago is the bid city for the 2016 olympic game and all we want that Chicago should win this bid. Considering Chicago's right now situation I think I am not bidding for the Chicago this time. Being in Chicago for almost 4 years I have seen just two season over here one is winter and another is construction. Adding to that city is in deficeit even before winning the bid. How they going to construct new sites for the games, by imposing more taxes on the citizens? That's all I want to know.

Go Chicago 2016

In my opinion Chicago will make a good Olympic host city, mostly because of its great cultural diversity and also because the global view that the city offers to its visitors. What's more, transportation is another strong reason for which Chicago should win the bid. If Chicago hosts the 2016 Games it won't take a too big effort to get around the city, because it owns plenty of means of transportation, trains, buses, taxis or you can ride a bike, this being a very common transportation mean for chicagoans. Further on, the architecture, the museums, the art, the theatres, all the great designer stores on the Magnificent Mile will provide an unforgettable time to all the tourists coming to see the Games from all over the world. Another reason that Chicago should be the host city in 2016 is because of its spectacular lakefront parklands and also its iconic skyline and the shoreline of Lake Michigan. All these will, of course, provide sufficient space for all the venues that are going to be built in Chicago, if the city wins the bid.

Famous Olympian

The Olympian that stands out the most in my memory is from my country. Romania first participated at the Olympic Games in 1900, with a single participant. The nation first sent a team to compete at the Games in 1924, and has only missed two editions each of the Summer Olympic Games and Winter Olympic Games since then.
A memorable moment in Romania's Olympic history and in my mind too, was in 1976 at the Montreal Summer Olympics when Nadia Comaneci's performance on the uneven bars was scored at a 10.0. It was the first time in modern Olympic gymnastics history that the score had ever been awarded. The scoreboards were not even equipped to display scores of 10.0—so Nadia's perfect marks were reported on the boards as 1.00.

Famous Olympian

The most famous olympian I can remind of myself is an Anglo-Indian person, who took part in 1900 the first ever appearence of India in olympic games. He was also the first athlete from India and first athlete representing an Asian nation to win an Olympic medal. He won two silver medals in the 1900 Summer Olympics in Paris, France. He came second in the 200 meters behind John Tewksbury of the United States and second in the 200 meters hurdles behind the legendary Alvin Kraenzlein of the United States. Pritchard set a world record in the second heat of the 100 metre hurdles which was bettered by Kraenzlein in the final. He reached the final of the 110m hurdles where he placed 5th, and participated in 60m and 100m sprint where he failed to qualify for the final.

Hi,

We are Alex and Faiyaz. Our blog's name is "OLYMPIC TORCH". We came up with this name as the flame is an important symbol of the Olympic Games. Commemorating the theft of fire from the Greek God Zeus by Prometheus, its origins lies in ancient Greece, where a fire was kept burning throughout the celebration of the ancient Olympics. The fire was reintroduced at the 1928 Summer Olympics is Amsterdam, and it has been part of the Olympics Game ever since. The torch relay of modern times which transports the flame from Greece to the various designated sites of the game had no ancient precedent and was introduced by Carl Diem at the 1936 Berlin Olympics.

Welcome to our blog!!!! This is where the fun begins.
